Healthy Hair: The Black Hair Information challenge is officially over!

For the past 3 months, I have been apart of a hair challenge on blackhairinformation.com and today I am going to write my review on everything. First off, this was my very first hair challenge that I have been apart of. I have tried to challenge myself, but never found luck with it. Surprisingly, I found that my hair did grow in those short times where I wore protective styles. When I saw this post, I immediately thought that it was right up my alley. The whole concept of the challenge was that we all were supposed to keep our hair in any protective style that we liked for 3 weeks and then for the 4th week, we could take it down and wear it out. I loved it because I could change up my look. At the beginning of my challenge, my hair stretched out to shoulder length from the nape. Today, we stretched it out in the same area and guess what? My hair grew 3 1/4 inches! My hair is 3/4 inches away from APL so I am happy about that! :) I finally found a style that I love and if you've guessed the bun, you are absolutely correct!

Recently, I made a post about the Mega Bun that I did to my hair and I absolutely LOVED it! But this time around, instead of heat stretching my hair like I usually do to keep it stretched, I put little box braids in my hair. Of course, it may not look like a pro did my braids, but I worked with what I could (yes, I did my own braids and no, I am not a good braider, but it was free and could be done on my own time). I call this my Protected Protective Style because I can wear my bun and keep those ends protected, but I could also keep my hair protected that was at first out and brushed down onto my head.

Now, before anyone gets confused, I simply braided my hair and then I put them in a mini bun. After doing so, I do my mega bun which takes less than 5 mins to do and then I am done. I can slip on a scarf and headband like usual, but none of my hair is actually out with this style which I love. I want to keep these in until January 2, 2014 so I can see how well I retained my length so this means ANOTHER HAIR CHALLENGE! :) This time, it will be a more personal challenge. I will update every week until the challenge is complete and I will take a photo once it is over. My goal during this time is BSL or close to it. I believe that I can do it!

Since I have these braids in, this cuts my hair regimen down. I love making my regimen as simple as possible. So here it is:

Mondays: shampoo, deep condition, bun (when leaving the house)
Everyday: moisturize, seal
3 Weeks: inversion method
3 Months: re-braid hair

See! It's very simple and I know that I can keep this up. I am excited that this challenge has been such a great success and I believe that if I keep doing this, that my hair will thrive.

Video: 9 Months of Growing Natural Healthy Hair

Here, I celebrated 9 months of growing my hair out. I am going to start making more videos soon because seeing this really showed me that my hair is growing. Sometimes, you need some proof whether it be a video or pictures because it really can seem as if your hair really isn't growing when in reality, it is. I found out that I was pregnant after this video so I stopped making videos, but now that I have my little one, there is no reason for me to not make a video (unless, you know, baby girl is crying or something lol).

Enjoy!

Video: 3 months, 6 months, 9 months BAM! Growing out my natural hair!

This video is a 3 months difference. I am showing my growth from my fade to my first 3 months, my 6 months, and then my 9 months of successfully growing out my natural hair without cutting or altering it by any means. I will do another video shortly once I get another charger for my Mac. (sorry it broke :( )

Video: My Natural Hair Story

Here is a video of my natural hair story that I wanted to share with everyone. It is about my back and forth challenge with wanting long and short hair and really learning to appreciate my own hair. I hope that you all enjoy! Have a great day!

My Mega Bun

Hi! So after watching that video that I posted last week, I was too excited and I wanted to try it out....SO I DID JUST THAT :)

Next to my hair cut (that I wore for a few years because it was so hot!) This is my second favorite style. It was so easy to do. It literally look 4 mins to do and I've been wearing it for a week now. All I do at night is tie my hair down with my silk scarf and I put my bonnet over my bun. I sleep on a silk pillow which also helps if the scarf doesn't seem to stay on. Also, what helps me out is putting oil down on my hair and flatting my hair (I don't use combs nor brushes when it's like this) and placing my scarf on for some extra hold.
I am telling you, this style is fabulous and if you could see it close up, I am sure that you will love it too. Try this out and just enjoy rocking your updo! :)

Video: The Mega Bun & The Saturn Bun | Special Occasion Updos on Natural Hair

I absolutely LOVE the first bun (both buns are fabulous), but I am going to do the first bun on my hair (as my go to bun). I am going to do bunning for 1 year to see how much hair I can retain since I don't have the time to get braids at my own leisure, which is perfectly fine. Also, this will help me to protect my ends and most importantly, KEEP MY HANDS OUT OF MY HAIR. I am going to try bunning because they are so easy to do and so pretty. My bun is like hers, which is why I am going to incorporate the hair on top of my bun so let's see how it goes.

Happy bunning!

Healthy Hair- The Inversion Method Results Are IN

So this past week, I've been doing the Inversion Method and today, I have the official results below:

Thursday, October 10, 2013

Front: 7 inches
Sides: 7 1/2 inches
Back: 7 inches

Friday, October 18, 2013

Front: 8 1/4 inches
Sides: 8 1/2 inches
Back: 8 inches

I am actually glad that this worked. I would've been happy if it only grew 1/4 or 1/2 inches, but to see these results, this makes me happy for next month. As stated previously, I will be doing this every 3 to 4 weeks. Next time, however, I will film (or take photos if the baby is crying) everything so until next time!

Have a great day!

Healthy Body- Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better

Healthy Mind- Positive Affirmations to get me through the day

I love how this simply speaks so much truth!

Video: I reached Waist Length in less than a Year! Relaxer #3 update

Healthy Hair- Growing My Hair to Waist Length in ONE YEAR

I am very positive that I can grow my hair to waist length in 1 year! You say whaaaaaaaaa? *side eye*

Yes! You heard me correctly!

Every month, I will post a picture of my hair growth. On me, waist length is 16 inches. I am currently at 8 inches so that means that I only have 8 inches to go and grow! I know some people may not believe me or may be skeptical, but I believe in speaking things into existence! I am going to CONTINUE to take better care of my hair! I am going to CONTINUE to take better care of my body! I strongly believe that your words can be spoken into existence! This is why I urge people to watch what they say to others, to children, and most importantly to themselves. I USED to be a negative person, but I have changed myself and it all begins with changing your MIND! I truly thank God for getting me to this point in life and also for giving me the strength, positive people in my life, and affirmations to continue this lifelong journey.

I want to encourage everyone to set goals, but I want you to also ACHIEVE them and don't listen to the haters/naysayers. I believe in you, but most importantly, YOU have to believe that YOU can do it!

Have a great day!

Here are some websites of people that have also achieved waist length from their past (shoulder) length hair. I really hope that this helps some of you all! :)

Healthy Foods- A Gorgeous New Way to Eat Your Veggies!

It will be good for you, trust me.

Healthy Foods- Walnut & Cranberry Salad

This looks great!

What you will need to make this yummy salad:

Your favorite type of salad
Cranberries
Walnuts
Extra virgin olive oil

Optional toppings:
Chicken
Feta
Light Dressing

Healthy Body- Working out with baby

I am in love with this jogger/bicycle! It is pretty cool in my eyes! You get to exercise from walking and also riding the bike, all while pushing your baby. There is no excuse to not exercise here! I have a baby carrier and boy, do they work your abs, back, and legs. My baby is now 12lbs and since I've been so small all of my life, anything over 10lbs has been heavy, but I am making it a point to exercise when I can and to exceed those 10lbs. I work out with my daughter everyday and opt to hold her or put her in her baby carrier when we are out and about opposed to pushing the stroller. But this stroller/bike combo here is making me think otherwise. I can see us going to the park and working out this way! I will look more into this today and post the price and more information on it.

Healthy Foods- Going Vegetarian!

I was that kid! (please don't laugh)

I was that kid that gave up my chicken for everyone's spinach since they didn't want it and I didn't really like meat. I was that kid that chose boneless chicken and picked all through my bone in chicken because I thought that it was "nasty" and "looked funny". I know that there weren't a lot of kids like me out there that chose their veggies over their meats, but hey, I didn't want to see the blood or know that the meat that I was eating came from a pig. I wasn't raised to do that. My family loves them some chicken, chitterlings, snoots, rib tips, and more. Me on the other hand, I liked my broccoli, corn, and carrots. Don't get me wrong though. I would eat a hotdog, burger, and a pepperoni pizza like it wasn't anyone's business, but lately, my boyfriend and I have been looking and taking inventory of the things that we put in our bodies, especially meat. We both decided that it would be best that we do not consume meat. This really made me think because it is ingrained in our minds that we need to consume animal's flesh, but why? Since I do not know much about nutrition, I will post videos that I have watched that are good for everyone to know. Going vegetarian makes me want to go back to my roots and study nutrition. I've seen family members and members of especially our black communities die left and right due to the things that we eat. I've always wanted to help out people that suffer with obesity, high blood pressure, and more. So I am starting here on my blog and I am going to spread this journey of being a vegetarian and just simply being healthy.

Get and stay healthy!

Healthy Hair- Inversion Method? What?!

Last week, I was browsing the internet and I happened to see a post regarding this "new" method for growing out your hair called the Inversion Method. After reading the article on this method, I thought to myself "Hey! I should give it a try! What would it hurt?" After all, I'm not pregnant anymore and I am healthy so I figured that I could give it a shot. I researched a little bit more on this method and basically everyone was saying the same thing. What this method does is it helps you grow at least 1 inch of hair in 7 days. Some people grow more while others grow less, but hey! I say be thankful because it actually grew some especially since we know that hair grows around 1/2 inch a month. But to be quite honest, this method has been around for ages. I read this comment that said this method has been done back in the 80's (yes, before I was even thought of) but as everyone knows (or should know) there is nothing new under the sun! This motivated me some more because since it's been around for a long time, I should give it a shot. I started on Thursday of last week and I have until this Thursday to finish it, so once Thursday approaches, I will post my results on this inversion method.

How do you do it?

  1. All you do is grab some oil. You can choose whatever you like and even heat it up if you want to do that.
  2. Massage your scalp with the oil.
  3. Bend over like you are going to tie your shoes, paint your toes, etc. for 4 minutes (YES, THAT'S ALL!)
  4. Pull yourself up slowly that way you won't get any headaches.
  5. That's all! Keep doing this for 7 days.
WARNING:
I really have to post this because as you all know, I am all about being healthy, but also your safety! Please do not do this inversion method if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Have a hernia
  • Have low or high blood pressure
  • Had a stroke recently
  • Have heart or circulatory problems
  • Have glaucoma
  • Have conjunctivitis also known as pink eye
  • Have a detached retina
  • Had a spinal injury
  • Have swollen joints
  • Have osteoporosis
  • Have unhealed fractures or injuries
  • Have an ear infection
  • Obesity
  • Or otherwise unhealthy

The key is to NOT go past those 7 days as your body will get used to this and will stop growing the 1 inch in 7 days. It is said that when you do this method, you are basically shocking your body and from the scalp massaging and the bending over combined, this actually helps your hair grow. Now, I am going to let you all know something since I was a little skeptical about this in the beginning, I measured my front, sides, and back of my head on day 1 (Thursday) and here were my measurements (next time, I will take a picture of it).

Front: 7 in.
Sides: 7 1/2 in.
Back: 7 in.

Now, since I was impatient and wanted to see my results sooner, 2 days ago (Sunday) I went and I measured my hair again to see if anything was actually working and these were my Sunday results:

Front: 8 in.
Sides: 8 in.
Back: 7 1/2 in.

My hair has grown 1 inch in the front and 1/2 inch on my sides and back of my head. I am pretty impressed and I am waiting until Thursday to see the final results for this month. I am going to try and keep this up for 12 months to see if anything happens. I am only doing this for 7 days as mentioned previously every 3-4 weeks. I am really excited and I do encourage those that are healthy and not pregnant to try this out. It won't hurt to try!

Have a blessed day!

Work at home opportunities

I understand that there are some people out there (including myself) that want to work from home or even make a little more cash from home and that is perfectly fine! I am here to help others out with finding some legit work at home opportunities. I believe to share what has been shared with me so that is what I am going to do. There are actually a lot of opportunities for working from home out there, but normally people ask me "How did you find out about that?" Well, the simple answer is just looking it up and staying on top of it. After giving birth, I started my hunt on working from home.

Before having my child, I didn't know that there were jobs out there like this that I could really find online, but with persistence and concentration (please watch out for scams! If they are asking you to pay them, please don't do that. Please. Save yourself some heartache and pain down the road) I found some pretty cool opportunities. I have worked at 2 work at home jobs that I will review very soon for anyone that has heard of these companies or was/is interested in these types of jobs. I just wanted to stop by to let you all know that I will be posting work at home opportunities on my blog as well for anyone that is interested.

Have a great day!

Video: Heat Stretching My Natural Hair - FAQs

Check out MsAliciaJames video on heat stretching!

Healthy Hair- Stretching Natural Hair

So after my pregnancy, I tried a little something new. I started flat ironing (not straight, but to stretch) my hair. I didn't know that this actually had a specific name for it, but after looking it up, I found out on MsAliciaJames website http://easynaturalhair.com/2013/05/29/heat-stretching-my-natural-hair/ that it is called "heat stretching".

The funny thing was our methods are very similar to one another. My hair currently is 7 1/2-8 in long, but when it is in it's shrunken state, I goes to around 2-3 in long. Crazy, right?! On my body, 6 in is shoulder length from my nape so right now I am a little passed that. During my first year of growing out my hair, I wore it in my shrunken state. Now that it is growing, my hair tangles more and simple braid outs and twist outs don't look good on me. So to stop the breakage from that, I started doing heat stretching. Since I am in a protective style challenge on http://www.blackhairinformation.com, I keep my hair braided or twisted (in my stretched state) until it starts itching which is normally at 2-3 weeks and then I wash it and I stretch it again. Here is what my wash day typically looks like when I do this method.

Day 1
Deep Condition (overnight if I put it in late at night or for 45-1hr if I am up)

Day 2
Shampoo
Condition
De-tangle
Leave-In Spray
Braid it up for the night

Day 3
Take down braids
Apply heat protectant
Flat iron

Now as you can tell, I do not blow dry my hair. I simply braid it up and keep it like that for the night. This helps it stay stretched and detangled. Also, this helps me to not put so much heat on my head. Since I have a baby, I can't sit for hours at a time to do my hair so I simply break it down in days if I have to. I used to never do a deep conditioner in the beginning (due to improper techniques and knowledge of my hair), but oh have things have changed! My hair loves deep conditioning.

I figure that we all live and learn some how. I do not flat iron my hair straight. I simply run like 1 or 2 passes over my hair at a 250-300 temperature that way it simply elongates (much like a blow dryer does). The reason why I don't use a blow dryer is because it literally pulled out my hair. I used to watch everyone else's YouTube page and found that what they do won't work for me, but that's okay! :) I just want to let everyone know to do what works best for them. I know some people do not use heat, but others do. I've had so many setbacks following others and now that I am learning for myself, my hair is actually growing and breaking and shedding a TON less.

My best advice is to do what works for you! :)

Healthy Hair- Hair growth!

So for every 2 months, I will take a picture of my hair growth and compare it with a older picture therefore we all can see together how much my hair has grown. I have to be honest, during my pregnancy, my hair did not really grow as much. Between washing my hair too much to stress, my hair broke off more. Now that I am learning what and what not to do with my hair, it is finally growing back again. I am very happy about that. This just goes to show that it is okay. We all do not retain length, but we all are learning each and every day. We just have to remember to never give up when we think that everything isn't going as planned. It's going to be okay and we all can make it together! Happy healthy hair everyone!
